MEET OUR TRAINEE ACCOUNTANT, NINA COUCHMAN!

11/02/2025

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, we asked our Trainee Accountant, Nina, some questions about her role at Port of Blyth whilst currently completing her BSc (Hons) in Accounting & Finance, as well as her plans to undertake a Level 7 CIMA Apprenticeship with Port of Blyth, upon completion of her degree. Find out what she had to say in the Q&A below:

  • What is involved in your role at Port of Blyth?

I am currently working part-time within the Finance department, whilst I complete the final year of my BSc (Hons) in Accounting & Finance degree with Newcastle University Business School. Upon completion of this degree, I will join the Port of Blyth team full-time and enrol on the Level 7 CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) Apprenticeship. This apprenticeship will take 3 years and will enable me to become a fully qualified Chartered Management Accountant.

Within my role, I am currently managing the petty cash book, cash book, Sage Barclaycard and year-end cost analysis.

  • What made you choose to work at Port of Blyth?

Port of Blyth is known for taking very good care of its staff, so I chose to work here as I knew I would be valued within the workplace; especially with its recent achievement of the Better Health at Work Bronze Award.

  • What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship after university?

It’s important to do your research into each company that you are considering and choose a company that you are motivated to work for and one that interests you. Likewise, research apprenticeships you are interested in and ensure they will help you achieve your desired qualification/career; I knew I wanted to be an accountant before university and that a CIMA apprenticeship would allow me to do this.

Port of Blyth values its employees as its greatest assets and is always looking to invest in developing new, talented, and hard-working colleagues to enhance our current service offering and contribute to the continued success of the business.
