Our 25 Years in Offshore Wind Journey
1993
First Wind Farm in a Marine Environment
Blyth Harbour Wind Farm established as the first in the UK in a “marine environment”. This featured 9 x 0.3 MW turbines located on the East Pier which were installed via a barge. This signifies the start of Port of Blyth leading the way in renewable energy.

2000
First Offshore Project Installed
25 years in offshore wind BEGINS!
Blyth made history by hosting the UK’s first offshore wind turbines. The project consisted of two 2MW Vestas wind turbines, each with a rotor diameter of 66m, situated on monopile foundations at around 10m water depth, less than 2km from shore.
At the time, these were the largest turbines installed offshore in the world. During operation the turbines were able to generate enough power to supply around 2,000 homes.

2008
Blyth Harbour Wind Farm repowered
Blyth Harbour Wind Farm repowered, with one REPower 3.4MW turbine at the base of the East Pier, replacing the original 9 x 0.3MW units on the pier. At the time of its installation, it was the largest onshore turbine in the UK and produced more power than the existing nine turbines put together.
