As a Trust Port serving stakeholders throughout the local community, the Port is a big supporter of local good causes, with a focus on helping charities and initiatives across four key themes: health and welfare; community cohesion; maritime heritage; and the advancement of marine engineering related learning.

SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY

The Port is a long time, leading sponsor of the town’s National League North football club Blyth Spartans AFC, and the title sponsor of Blyth Running Club’s popular Port of Blyth 10k and Blyth Town Council’s free Northumberland Live music festival.

Every year the Port runs a Christmas appeal focused on supporting Blyth families living in challenging circumstances over the festive period, while a wide range of community-based groups located near to the Port’s four terminals receive financial and in-kind support from the Port all year round.

ENERGY CENTRAL CAMPUS

Energy Central Campus (ECC) is a unique partnership between the Port of Blyth, Northumberland County Council and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, focused on creating the pipeline of talent required for the expanding clean energy sector, at the same time, inspiring, training and delivering pathways to employment for the local community.

They will deliver this vision over two phases:

Energy Central Learning Hub – A new STEM education and vocational training facility, developing energy sector skills and aspirations among young people at school and college, and adults re-training for new roles. Based at the Port of Blyth, learners will develop skills in a real-world energy port setting.
Energy Central Institute – A new higher-level skills and innovation facility, developing energy sector expertise at degree and PhD levels. Creating a focal point for collaboration between energy businesses, OREC, and Northeast universities, it will develop higher- level skills and technological innovations to keep the region at the forefront of energy sector growth.

THE ENERGY CENTRAL LEARNING HUB

The first phase of Energy Central Campus, The Energy Central Learning Hub (ECLH) is under build and will provide a major education, skills and industrial training facility when it opens in late summer 2024. It is located in the Port of Blyth, at the heart of a major Clean Energy industrial cluster, and will incorporate:

Workshops and classrooms supporting vocational training for young people including sector-facing T levels
A major regional STEM Hub (STEM@Energy Central), to inspire young learners and highlight the excellent career opportunities in the clean energy sector
Specialist electrical, mechanical and digital skills training facilities
Support for apprenticeships across sector companies
A Clean Energy Visitor Centre to showcase sector industries and jobs to residents of the North East, including an immersive 3D technology experience
Conferencing and events space for up to 250 people

This major new £15m facility will be a major asset for the region, connecting the community to the vast opportunities available within the clean growth sector centred in Blyth.

THE ENERGY CENTRAL INSTITUTE

The second phase of Energy Central Campus, The Energy Central Institute (ECI) will be a new higher-level skills and innovation facility, developing energy sector expertise at degree, postgraduate and PhD levels. It will incorporate:

State of the art research labs and lecture theatre
A focal point for collaboration between energy businesses, OREC, and Northeast universities
Progression on to higher-level education and degree apprenticeships from ECLH provision
Higher-level skills and technological innovations to keep partner businesses at the forefront of clean energy sector growth
Support for the development of key industrial clusters, together with the associated engineering and digital skills required to support innovation and business growth

BLYTH TALL SHIP

The Port-supported Blyth Tall Ship project provides opportunities for local young people not in employment, education or training through the delivery of boat building courses, which aim to drive up the skills, confidence and career prospects of its participants.

With the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund, Blyth Tall Ship acquired a 100-year-old Baltic Trader that – thanks to their work space – they are currently restoring and refitting. They hope to recreate the original voyage of Blyth merchant seaman Captain William Smith, who discovered the first land mass in Antarctica in 1819.

TALL SHIPS & MORE

The Port regularly welcomes tall ships, military vessels and other crafts of interest to the public. In 2016 for example the Port hosted and jointly funded the North Sea Tall Ships Regatta which attracted half a million visitors to the town and triumphed in two categories at The Journal Culture Awards.
