25/02/2025

Blyth Tall Ship, the award-winning maritime heritage charity, is entering an exciting new chapter as Siobhan Sargeant takes over as CEO, following the departure of founder Clive Gray after 15 years of transformative leadership.

Since its founding in 2009, Blyth Tall Ship has grown into a nationally recognised charity, providing maritime skills training, employability programmes, and wellbeing initiatives that have helped over 500 unemployed individuals into work, supported 300 people in post-pandemic wellbeing programmmes, and welcomed over 100,000 visitors to explore their maritime heritage. With a dedicated volunteer force of over 400 people, the charity has preserved traditional skills while creating real-world opportunities for those in need.

Reflecting on the time at the helm, Clive Gray said: “It has been an honour to found and grow Blyth Tall Ship. What began as a small study has become a thriving charity that transforms lives through maritime heritage, training and wellbeing programmes. Together, we have built a strong, supportive community, preserved valuable skills, and created opportuntiies for those who need them most. As I step away to pursue my role in the Methodist Church, I leave knowing Blyth Tall Ship is in its best shape yet, ready for the challenges ahead.”

Incoming CEO Siobhan Sargeant brings 20 years of experience in the charity and business sectors in the North East and is eager to build on this legacy. She shared her excitement about the role, stating:

“I’m delighted to join Blyth Tall Ship as CEO as we embark upon the next stage in our charity’s development, and I’m genuinely excited about the possibilities ahead. The passion and drive of our supporters, from dedicated Trustees to tireless staff and volunteers, is inspiring. Together, they create a community where learners, visitors, and supporters come to celebrate heritage but leave with a sense of hope, possibility, and renewed self-belief. I’m proud to be part of this journey.”

Alan Todd, Port Director at Port of Blyth, commented: “The Port of Blyth is delighted to continue its support for Blyth Tall Ship Charity as Siobhan takes over from Clive as CEO. The charity performs an amazing role in the community and has grown from strength to strength over the last 15 years. We are confident that the next 15 years, under the new leadership, will create more transformational life changing opportunities for the people of Blyth and beyond.”

As the charity moves forward, plans are already in place to develop sustainable income streams, including an immersive visitor attraction that will bring its rich maritime archive to life. With a strong foundation and a passionate team, Blyth Tall Ship remains committed to transforming lives and enriching the community for years to come.
