We recently interviewed Matthew Boucheron, Trainee Terminal Manager at the Port of Blyth, to ask him about his career progression since joining the Port of Blyth and what is involved in his current role. Find out what he had to say in the Q&A below!
- When did you join the Port of Blyth and what was your role?
I started at the Port of Blyth in September 2013, aged 18 as a Warehouse Apprentice.
2. How have you progressed since your first role at the Port of Blyth?
A short time into my Warehouse Apprenticeship, I was offered a full-time contract as a Warehouse Operative alongside completing my NVQ Level 2 in Port Operations. After two years in the warehouse, I was moved across to the Stevedore team. This involved working daily on a variety of projects across the different terminals and companies within the Port. Whilst in this role, I gained my crane driver license at the age of 21 and began to build up my Port operation knowledge.
After six years on the Stevedore team, I was successful in my application to become a Stevedore Supervisor. This involved using my knowledge of the Port to run and lead various projects in the Port, working alongside a range of different companies.
Finally, I was appointed to my current role as Trainee Terminal Manager in June 2024. This has given me the opportunity to use my practical knowledge and experience of the Port of Blyth to move into the Operations team.
3. What do you like the most about working at the Port of Blyth?
One of the most exciting things about working at the Port of Blyth is that every day is different and even after eleven years, no two days are the same. This industry has given me the chance to progress from an apprentice to a manager, a role I would never have imagined when I first started.
4. If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering applying for a role at the Port of Blyth, what would it be?
One piece of advice for anyone considering a role at the Port of Blyth would be to not let their current career, qualifications or experience put them off an application. I came to the Port from a carpet fitting apprenticeship, having never really considered this as a career path. I took what felt like an uncertain step to start again as an apprentice, but I have never looked back!
Working at Port of Blyth opens up a number of opportunities and we are always looking to invest in developing new, talented, and hard-working colleagues to enhance our current service offering and contribute to the continued success of the business.
