Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Battleship Wharf Expansion scheme?

The Battleship Wharf Expansion is a major investment to enhance capacity, infrastructure, and capability at the Port of Blyth, supporting the next generation of offshore wind and clean energy projects.

Why is this expansion needed?

As offshore wind projects grow in scale and complexity, there is increasing demand for larger facilities, deeper channels, and more advanced infrastructure. This expansion ensures the Port of Blyth can support future industry requirements.

What are the economic benefits for the region?

The project will:

Create jobs and support skills development

Attract investment into the North East

Strengthen the UK’s clean energy supply chain

Drive long-term regional economic growth

How does the project support Net Zero goals?

By enabling the delivery of offshore wind and other low-carbon energy projects, the expansion plays a key role in supporting the UK’s Net Zero targets and energy transition. It also incorporates more sustainable operations through the use of electric plant including a heavy-duty electric crane, helping to reduce operational emissions and improve air quality.

What environmental considerations have been made?

The design encapsulates the existing ‘no dredge zone,’ permanently containing historic contamination and minimising disturbance to the surrounding environment.

Who is funding the project?

The initial design phase is jointly funded by The Crown Estate, Northumberland County Council, the North East Combined Authority, and the Port of Blyth.

When will construction begin?

Timelines for construction will be confirmed following completion of the design phase and necessary approvals.

How can organisations get involved?

We welcome discussions with developers, manufacturers, and supply chain partners interested in working with the Port of Blyth.

What will happen to the small boats currently berthed at Battleship Wharf (37 Jetty)?

A number of small boats are currently berthed within the area identified for potential future reclamation as part of the Battleship Wharf Expansion scheme. The reclamation works will not take place immediately, and the project must first progress through the initial early development and approvals phases before construction begins. The early development phase will look at how berths on 37 jetty will be affected and determine if any or all need to be removed. Should this be necessary, the Port will endeavour to provide alternative moorings wherever feasible.

The Port of Blyth is committed to working closely with affected boat owners and stakeholders throughout the process, and a significant public consultation exercise will take place before any works are undertaken.

Will residential housing form part of the proposed land reclamation at Battleship Wharf?

There are no plans to include residential properties or residential land within the scheme. The project is still in its early development and planning stages, and a full public consultation will take place before any construction works begin.

How will the local community be kept informed?

The Port of Blyth is committed to ongoing engagement with local communities through consultations, events, and regular project updates.
