PORT OF BLYTH STATEMENT ON BLYTH RELIEF ROAD

15/10/2026

The Port of Blyth is disappointed that Government has withdrawn funding for the proposed Blyth Relief Road, given the importance of reliable and efficient transport infrastructure to the town’s future economic growth.

The Energy Central cluster around the Blyth Estuary is already one of the largest clean energy hubs in the UK, and has significant potential to attract further investment, create jobs and strengthen the regional economy. The proposed relief road was an essential element in unlocking such future growth and reducing congestion both now and into the longer term.

The Port welcomes continued collaboration between Government, local authorities and regional partners to identify a way forward and ensure that transport infrastructure can support Blyth’s long-term economic ambitions.

Martin Lawlor OBE, Chief Executive of the Port of Blyth, said: “We are disappointed by the decision not to proceed with funding for the Blyth Relief Road. With a nationally significant clean energy cluster based around the estuary and major investment taking place in port infrastructure, clean energy initiatives and skills, Blyth has real momentum and potential for further growth. Reliable transport links are essential to supporting that ambition, and it is important that the town’s road infrastructure remains a priority.”
