FROM APPRENTICE TO TERMINAL MANAGER: CRAIG WOOD’S CAREER JOURNEY AT PORT OF BLYTH

11/02/2026

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we caught up with Craig Wood, our South Harbour Terminal Manager, to reflect on his career journey at Port of Blyth. Craig began his career with us as an apprentice and, through hard work and commitment, has progressed into a senior leadership role. Here’s what he had to say about his experience.

  • When did you join the Port of Blyth and what was your role?

I joined the Port of Blyth in 2002 straight after leaving school, starting out as an Apprentice Carpenter. I was part of a small team of tradesmen, where I learnt both the practical skills of the role and how the Port operates on a day-to-day basis.

  • How have you progressed since your first role at the Port of Blyth?

In 2006, I completed my apprenticeship and was fortunate enough to be given a full-time contract as a Carpenter. In 2014, I moved across to the Operations Department and became a Crane Operator. After around 12 months, I returned to the Carpenters’ Workshop as Supervisor, where I also oversaw lifting and vessel operations. This helped me build a strong understanding of lifting operations and wider terminal activities. In April 2017, I was appointed Port Terminal Manager at South Harbour, which is the role I’m proud to hold today.

  • What do you like the most about working at the Port of Blyth?

The strong sense of purpose and teamwork across the Port. People are knowledgeable, approachable, and take pride in doing things safely and efficiently. I’m also grateful for the career development opportunities I have had, along with the training and support I’ve received throughout my journey.

  • If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering applying for a role at the Port of Blyth, what would it be?

Take the time to understand what the Port is all about and the variety of work undertaken. Coming into the business with a willingness to learn and get involved will stand you in good stead.

Working at Port of Blyth opens up a number of opportunities and we are always looking to invest in developing new, talented, and hard-working colleagues to enhance our current service offering and contribute to the continued success of the business.
