Port of Blyth has welcomed confirmation from The Crown Estate that new seabed sites will be leased directly off the North East coast – a landmark decision set to unlock at least six gigawatts of offshore wind capacity and drive billions of pounds of private investment into the region.
The announcement, championed by Kim McGuinness, positions the North East at the centre of the UK’s next phase of offshore wind growth. With deepwater facilities and 25 years’ expertise in the offshore wind sector, Port of Blyth is well placed to support new developments across the full project lifecycle, from manufacturing and marshalling to installation and long-term operations and maintenance. The expansion will also benefit the Energy Central cluster at the Port of Blyth, which is home to more than 50 businesses operating across the offshore wind and wider renewable energy sector, strengthening an established ecosystem of specialist skills, services and innovation.
This capability is strengthened through the North East Ports partnership, which brings together Port of Blyth, Port of Tyne, Port of Sunderland, and Newcastle International Airport in a shared commitment to raise the region’s profile as a world-leading hub for sustainable trade, offshore energy, and green innovation. By working collaboratively, the partnership enhances the North East’s offer to global offshore wind developers and investors, showcasing the scale, connectivity, and capability available across the region.
The new sites could deliver capacity equivalent to around 462 turbines, generating enough clean energy to power almost a quarter of homes in England and Wales. For Port of Blyth, the expansion represents a significant opportunity to attract further investment, increase activity across engineering, construction, logistics and marine services, and support continued development of port and quay infrastructure.
It also reinforces the role of Energy Central Campus in developing the skilled workforce required to meet future demand, ensuring local people are equipped to access the high-quality jobs created by the sector’s continued growth.
Martin Lawlor OBE, Chief Executive of Port of Blyth and Chair of Energy Central Campus, said: “The North East’s ports will play a vital role in the UK’s offshore wind expansion, and Port of Blyth is proud to be at the forefront of that as a leading hub for the sector. Alongside this, through Energy Central Campus we have a mission to develop the clean energy workforce of the future to ensure local people benefit from the jobs this growth will create. By combining our ports, industry, and skills, the North East is well placed to lead the UK’s offshore wind future.”
The announcement sits at the heart of the Mayor’s Plan for Green Jobs, which sets out how the North East will turn major clean energy opportunities into secure, well-paid work for local people through investment in infrastructure, skills, and training.
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said: “This is about making sure people here benefit first. From young people starting out, to adults retraining for a new career, securing these offshore wind sites means thousands of good jobs on people’s doorsteps. We’ve worked hard to make the case for the North East and this is proof that other are now seeing the potential our region has. This is how we make green energy the new coal mining and shipbuilding for our region: creating jobs that last, helping families to thrive, and putting the North East at the forefront of the UK’s green energy revolution.”
For Port of Blyth, this announcement signals not only increased offshore wind capacity, but a transformational opportunity to accelerate investment, strengthen partnerships and secure the long-term economic benefits of the UK’s clean energy transition for the region.
