MEET OUR BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION APPRENTICE, TIA MORTON!

09/02/2026

To mark the start of National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we caught up with Tia Morton, our Business Administration Apprentice based at our Battleship Wharf Terminal, to learn more about her role and experience at the Port of Blyth.

Tia plays a key role in supporting the day-to-day operations at the Port’s Battleship Wharf site, acting as one of the first points of contact for colleagues, customers and visitors alike. Below, she shares more insight into her role, what she brings to the team and why an apprenticeship was the right choice for her.

  • What is involved in your role at Port of Blyth?

My role at the Port of Blyth is in Business Administration, which primarily includes answering phones, filing and maintaining important documents, and welcoming visitors to site while offering assistance where needed.

  • What do you bring to the Port of Blyth team?

I like to think that I bring support and reliability to the team. I enjoy helping others and taking on tasks that make someone else’s workload easier. My role also allows me to use and develop my skills while supporting different departments across the business, which has helped me gain a wider understanding of how the port operates as a whole.

  • What made you decide to do a Business Administration Apprenticeship with the Port of Blyth?

After leaving school, I realised that sixth form and college weren’t the right path for me. I wanted to gain practical experience while still learning, so an apprenticeship felt like the perfect option. When I saw the vacancy at the Port of Blyth, I thought it would be a great opportunity to build my skills while supporting a well-established and respected business.

  • What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling on a similar apprenticeship?

Since starting my apprenticeship, my communication skills have improved massively, and I now feel much more confident speaking to people both inside and outside the workplace. It’s a great way to learn, gain real experience and grow in confidence at the same time.
