PORT OF BLYTH CELEBRATES ANOTHER YEAR OF RECORD-BREAKING PERFORMANCE

29/04/2025

The Port of Blyth announced record financial performance for the fourth consecutive year at its recent Annual Public Meeting.

The Port was delighted to share that Port turnover proved highest on record at 22.23 million and overall Group turnover grew to second highest on record at £31.48 million, with an operating profit and profit before tax of £2.65 million and £2.23 million, respectively. The Port’s operating business remained the largest element of Group activities and continued to contribute roughly two thirds of revenue generated. This service offering is strengthened by the Port’s logistics, forwarding and export packing subsidiary, Transped, and award-winning training division, Port Training Services.

In 2024, the Port continued to lead the way in renewable energy, maintaining its reputation as one of the UK’s leading offshore energy support bases. This included supporting the ongoing mobilisation of the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, as well as the construction of one of the world’s largest wind turbine monopile drills at its South Harbour Terminal. Other offshore energy activities ranged from the handling of specialist subsea equipment to heavy project lifts. Support was also supplied to the oil and gas sector, including the handling of pipe reels and decommissioning services through the Port’s dedicated decom facility at Battleship Wharf. In addition, the Port also remained an important hub for the movement of a range of project, containerised, dry bulk, and break-bulk cargoes.

International logistics and forwarding subsidiary, Transped, continued to provide reliable, end-to-end global solutions to its expanding customer base throughout 2024. Although profitability was down, investment in specialist heavy duty containers strengthened services whilst maintaining the twice-weekly container service between The Netherlands and Blyth. Meanwhile, Port Training Services (PTS) had another successful year, offering training in heavy industry, offshore renewables, and the Port sector. As the leading provider of the Port Operative apprenticeship in the UK, PTS’ delivery continued to grow throughout 2024 at locations across the UK, further supporting the development of highly skilled workers for the Port industry.

Additionally, the Group made considerable progress in delivering more sustainable port operations, supporting the UK’s clean energy transition. This resulted in an overall reduction of 7.3% in carbon emissions generated from Port activities, with the target to achieve net zero by 2040.

Martin Lawlor OBE, Chief Executive of Port of Blyth, said: ” I am delighted to share that we have achieved another record-breaking year, further cementing the Port’s reputation as a leading UK offshore energy cluster. This success is a testament to the dedication and effort of our outstanding workforce, who remain our core asset, driving exceptional levels of service.”

Chair of the Board of Commissioners, Catherine Young, added: ” It is incredibly pleasing to have seen such outstanding performance during my first year as Chair. This continued success reinforces my confidence in the Port’s strategic direction and its vital contribution to both the regional economy and the local community.”

The Port’s performance was reported at its Annual Public Meeting which was recently held both in-person and online. This important event forms a significant part of the Port of Blyth’s commitment to its stakeholders as a leading UK statutory Trust Port.

During the event, the Port launched its Annual Review 2024, which is available to download here: https://portofblyth.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/POB-Annual-Review-2024-DIGI.pdf
